I am building a 79 coupe into a nice road car. Progress is steady to say the least, but I am moving forward! The next big and expensive job is the body/paint work. It has a 2.0 cih, 5 speed box and Manta A axel. All this is in and ready to fire up. Today I have been offered a GTE 16v for £500.00. Engine is mint, car a bit rough. Do I bother buying it for the engine? Is it worth it? I know the sumps are getting expensive. I know you'll all say it depends what your doing with the car.... but I don't want to finish my car only to be a bit disapointed with the performance, and wondering what it could have been! What do you think?

its all down to cost and power.
how much power are you used to,(or want) and how much are you prepared to spend.
you say you are running a 2.0 cih, and mention the sump from the 1.8, but have you considered the clutch/gearbox setup as they are different to the 1.8 (1.8 box is the one you need for the conversion) then theres the ignition/management system to think of, as the astra/xe distributor fouls on the bulkhead unless you chop it about. i'm running an xe from my old astra gsi and can honestly say that getting hold of the engine is only the start. i'd work out all the parts you need, work out what they'll prob cost you and then decide if you want to go that far/ spend that much. don't know if anyone else agrees with me on here, but the parts and costs can add up more than you first allow for.
having said that, you'll always want more power whatever you do.

Thanks for the advise. I just fancied the idea of a 16v Kadett! My other car is an original Nova Sport and daily driver is a Transit van, so no major power there! Have had alsorts of cars with alsorts of differing power. Kit cars to rally cars, vans to Mini's, tractors to bikes!! I was allowing about £1000.00 for engine and fitting(sump etc). The Astra loom and ecu was going to be used along with megasquirt? My mate has it all planned as he is fitting it! Bad time of year financally though. Also just had stainless exhaust fitted to Kadett which would proberbly need changing. There seams more negatives than positives. Decision made. Just out of curiosity, whats parts availability like for the coversion bits?
